What If SMU Goes Unbeaten?

So Southern Methodist is 18-0 right now and they are banned from post season play.  So after the regular season they're done, no conference tournament and no NCAA/NIT/any other tournament in March.  So what does it mean if they go undefeated?  Nothing.  The play in the American Athletic Conference, where their best competition is UCONN (who hasn't been seriously good since winning it all in 2014), Memphis, and UCF.  Those teams are world beaters by NO means.  If you think they'd actually win the NCAA tournament and go undefeated you, my friend, are certifiably insane.  Obviously there's a chance it could happen, but they'd have to get through the likes of Kansas, Oklahoma, Michigan Sate, Maryland, North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky, and so on (not all of them obviously but to win it all at LEAST one of them).  They made it through a non-conference schedule where their toughest competition was Stanford and Michigan.  Big names, average programs.  SMU is a good program, but if Kentucky last year (who was actually very flawed but still maybe the most talented team ever) couldn't do it, SMU can not.  Sorry Mustang faithful, but if SMU even actually does finish this season undefeated its nothing but a nice anecdote for down the road.  I'm sure if it happens people will be up in arms about how it's not fair how they won't get to try and actually be undefeated champs.  But a 30-0 SMU team still isn't even a top 100 college hoops team of all time.  If they would have played powerhouse programs this year then maybe you have a point, but if you only schedule Stanford and Michigan, two teams who probably won't even make the tournament, and you play in the American Conference it's not that impressive, it's impressive sure, but still.  You take any of the current top 5, or even the preseason top 5 for that matter, and gave them SMU's schedule they'd do the same thing and you're dumb if you think SMU is actually better because they didn't lose.  They likely will lose at some point, but again, even if they don't it's not that great.  Take some of the best teams in college basketball, give them this schedule, same result.  And if the undefeated thing does happen and SMU people are upset they don't get to play in the post season?  Shouldn't have broken the rules I guess, it's a tough break but you weren't going to go undefeated and win it all, not a chance.

Hey, please share this if you liked it because if you don't then my blog is like SMU's hypothetical unbeaten season.  Impressive (maybe not I'll let you be the judge of that) but meaningless.
